History Made as CryptoPunk NFT Sells for Over $23 Million

The NFT space has hit another landmark moment as a recent auction saw CryptoPunk #5822 sell for a record-breaking 8,000 ETH (approximately $23.7 million). The sale of the neon blue Punk ‘Alien,’ which sports a royal blue hat, has expectedly sent shock waves through the community, further catapulting the digital asset into NFT stardom.

The person responsible for the purchase was Deepak Thapliyal (known as Deepak.eth), who is the CEO of blockchain technology company, Chain. Deepak took to Twitter to personally announce his digital acquisition, where in response to receiving congratulations, he stated: “I am able to still HODL #ETH while buying this. Basically Long’d ETH to punk-in. #DeFi FTW”.

Despite his obvious pride in his purchase, Thapliyal is yet to inaugurate the Punk as his Twitter profile picture, as perhaps he is reluctant to remove his Bored Ape NFT, which currently occupies the ever-important spot.

The sale, which was verified by the CryptoPunks Bot Twitter on February 12th, generated a price which doubles that of the previous Punk record, which was set in June 2021 when ‘Coin Alien’ CryptoPunk #7523 sold at Sotheby’s “Natively Digital: A Curated NFT Sale” for $11.75 million.

With Sotheby’s gearing up to host ‘Punk It!‘ later this month, a mass auction which’ll see 104 CryptoPunks go up for grabs, it’ll be interesting to observe whether Thapliyal’s over-the-odds Punk purchase will have any influence on the prices generated in this sale.
